Utility Replacement Work Begins Near Bridge

September 9 2013

Crews have started work to upgrade century-old water, sewer, and stormwater utility pipes near the Johnson Street Bridge. These utilities are being replaced in advance of new road alignments that will be built for the new bridge.

Work is currently underway in the area of Store and Wharf Streets between Swift Street and Yates Street. Work is expected to continue in this area from now until December 2013. Crews will then continue utility replacement work along Esquimalt Road with completion expected by December 2013.

Please note that some traffic disruptions, including temporary lane closures, will be in effect during working hours while work is underway.

The current bridge will remain open to pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and marine traffic until the new bridge opens in late 2015. Full project completion, including removal of the rail bridge, landscaping, and installation of public art is expected by March 2016.
