Work Progressing on Schedule for New Intersection on West Side

November 6 2014

Work is progressing on schedule for the completion of the intersection at Harbour Road and Esquimalt Road. By the end of the month new signal lights will be in place, the south extension of Harbour Road will be complete and open to traffic and crews will have completed the installation of new sidewalks with accessible curb. Crews will be paving parts of the intersection over the coming days. Harbour Road north of Esquimalt is expected to remain closed to vehicles over the next few months as crews continue with bridge construction work on the west side of the harbour. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will remain in place.

ABOVE: Crews work on a new two-way extension of Harbour Road south of Esquimalt Road. In a few weeks the new road will open, providing access to the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort and eventually the future waterfront green space. In 2016, public land on the south side of the bridge (left side of photo) will be consolidated to create more than two acres of waterfront park space.

Harbour Work

All new bridge foundation work below the harbour is expected to be complete by the end of the month. This will mark a significant milestone in project progress. The next significant phase of work to occur in December includes a large concrete pour on the east side for the bascule pier. The bascule pier is the part of the bridge that will contain the mechanical and electrical systems that move the bridge open and close for marine traffic.

ABOVE: Crews complete the top of the rest pier of the new bridge. The rest pier is the part of the bridge where the lifting part of the bridge (bascule leaf) rests.
